Your values run like an undercurrent through every decision in your life both on a conscious and a subconscious level.
They determine what motivates us, what we want to do with our lives, what people we want to spend time with, what our political views are, what we put in our baskets when we go grocery shopping, what we do for a living, how we spend our free time etc. etc. etc.
We each have certain values embedded in our personalities that help guideline our lives.
For instance, it could be important for you to have a certain level of independence, or feeling of safety and security, it could be important to you to be ambitious and focus on your career or you could feel a need to focus on adventure and trying new things.
Even if you can recognise all the above-mentioned things some will evidently be more important to you than the other.
So, what determines what values are important to you?
We are shaped through the different environments we grow up and live in and that determines which values are important for us.
You can be influenced by family, friends, society in general, religion, culture, financial situation, social class even what country you grew up in and during which time historically.
It is very valuable for us to become more aware of what our values are to get a deeper insight into what lies beneath our decisions and life choices to be able to answer the question:
Am I really living the life I want?
Maybe you want to get to know yourself a little better to make the right choices and decisions for you.
Maybe you feel stuck in a relationship, a job situation or living situations or something else without being able to pinpoint exactly what it is that just makes it feel off to you.
You might have conflicting values preventing you from being where you really want to be.
When you start to investigate your values a little closer you get a deeper insight to what is really important to you, and you can see more clearly in which direction you want to take certain aspects of your life.
If this has sparked your curiosity, try this simple exercise:
- Think of the area in your life that you want to discover.
2. Ask yourself: “What is the most important for you in your… (relationship, job, living situation, hobby etc.)” Make a list of things, write at least 10 values down.
3. Go through each value on your list and ask yourself:
“How do I know that this value is the most important to me?”
Be honest with yourself and don’t judge yourself.
4. Write your answers down and add any more values that might pop up when going through your list.
5. Afterwards, look at your list of values and put them in a prioritised order starting with the one most important to you. Try to be very mindful while doing this exercise and really sense which values means more to you than others. Again, be honest with yourself and don’t judge yourself.
You will get a clearer perspective on what values are really important to you in the certain area of you life that you wanted to discover. This exercise can be an eye-opener and help give you more direction in your life.
I wish you all the best in discovering your true values.
